Hello.

Hi 👋🏼 I'm Greg Smith. I'm a UX designer and design system leader with a background in front-end engineering. I build & scale design systems that solve business challenges and improve productivity.

Design system strengths.

📢 System Leadership

I lead by example. I advocate for and practice the standards and methods necessary to ship stable, reliable systems.

🚀 Driving Business Goals

I build systems that serve organizational goals. My experience helps me predict & avoid blockers and deliver progress.

🦄 Design + Code Skills

I enjoy combining design craft with technology. I'm embracing LLM tools to build Figma plugins.

🛠️ Library Construction

From tokens and foundations to multi-variant component sets, I produce tools that help designers work faster and smarter.

👋🏼 Education & Support

I've led and managed onboarding, real-time support, and team office hours. I meet users where they are, and I collaborate with empathy.

🤓 Engineering Partner

My front-end experience makes me an ideal collaborator with engineering & accessibility partners.

Recent work.

I spent more than a decade as a hybrid designer/developer in client services. I've spent the previous eight years in focused UX roles where I've been lucky enough to nurture my passion for design systems. I'm a player-coach, and I enjoy the challenge of system-product collaboration.

My case studies are focused on the design system work I've done at Walmart, over the past five years. Design systems are my happy place, and I'd be happy to spend way too much time talking systems with you! 🤓

Building design systems that scale

I embedded with an enterprise product team as the design system SME to build a pattern library, extending Living Design, Walmart's core system. The new library addresses the more custom needs of product designers and engineers in Walmart's enterprise business pillar.

Complex component construction

When multiple teams create similar but diverging patterns, the result is design and tech debt. This Filter Panel is one of the complex but flexible organism-level components I created for a pattern library that extends Walmart's core design system. When complex components are built with design tokens and strict system standards, they're more consistent, reusable, and easier for engineers to assemble.

Evolving the designer experience in Figma

I used Cursor (AI code editor) to build a Figma plugin, allowing designers to easily create variations of a complex Side Navigation component. I was able to accomplish, on my own, what would have previously required a dedicated engineering resource. Designers can quickly iterate their Side Navigation elements without the need to submit a ticket for a library update.

Incorporating native mobile patterns

Our design system team needed to pivot from a platform agnostic approach to all components and patterns, and help users implement existing native mobile patterns. The test case would be a component set of date pickers and calendars. I compared existing system offerings to native offerings, collaborated with native engineers to understand the best approaches, and created components and documentation to guide product teams.

Design system governance

I designed and documented a governance workflow for our core system (which evolved over time, as the team evolved). I created a similar version of that process for an enterprise pattern library, as we scaled the core system into our primary business pillars.
